Spirit Week and Fall Family Weekend

Pep Rally
Friday Night Pep Rally

Spirit Week and Fall Family Weekend was fun for all! Each day, as part of the Class Participation Competition, classes were assigned different colored clothing to wear. The freshmen took advantage of their easy color - white - and had 100% participation.

The seniors won Tuesday's activity, which was Twin Day and later dominated the Ultimate Frisbee competition. Wednesday's Clash Day brought a creative blend of clothes that are no longer in circulation such as the bright neon jackets of the 1980's. The nightly competition was volleyball in the Field House. The seniors lost to the sophomores who displayed an admirable effort and beat the freshmen in the championship game.

Thursday was Crazy Hair Day and all agreed that Jake Johnson stole the show with his impersonation of a faculty member. That night, kickball came down to the wire, but the seniors pulled ahead to win. On Friday students, faculty and staff wore jeans along with Wayland red and white attire - the campus was filled with everyone showing their Wayland spirit.

All week long and throughout the weekend, there was an uplifting attitude on campus. Spirit week culminated on Friday, with the beginning of Fall Family Weekend, which gives parents and family members the opportunity to visit campus; go to class with their Wayland student; attend parent/teacher/mentor conferences; eat meals in Pickard Dining Hall; cheer at Wayland's athletic events, and much more.

The Friday night pep rally was a loud, energetic evening with the final games and cheers shaking the Lindsay Gym roof. Over all, the seniors took home the gold in the Spirit Week Class Competition.

Saturday night featured the Homecoming Dance and a Parent's Reception at the President's House following the coronation the Homecoming Court. It was a great week for everyone.

 Remembering Ann Nicole Nelson `89

Ann's Best Friend Suzy Boggs Scherb `89
and Ann's Father Gary Nelson

Although Spirit Week had begun, there was an interlude for reflection on Monday, September 12, 2011, as Wayland Academy held a Ten Year Memorial Service for Ann Nelson `89, a victim of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Her father, Gary Nelson, as well as several others spoke to the entire student body, faculty, staff and a few community members about Ann and how she could "light-up" a room.

Many memories of Ann were shared. Her best friend Suzy Boggs Scherb `89, related that when Suzy first came to Wayland, she felt like she didn't fit in, but Ann joined her at lunch one day and their friendship blossomed from there. Suzy also said, "There are many of our escapades that I can't share with you as I still fear the wrath of Mr. Lennertz, plus I don't want to put ideas into your head. However, I will say that Ann had a very creative interpretation of Wayland's Dress Code."

Trustee Chair Susan Peterson `63 spoke of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, as many of our current students were between the ages of four and seven at the time. Susan explained to the student body that within each generation there are events that make us remember exactly where we were at the time. For some it may have been the assassination of President John. F. Kennedy, for others it was 9/11.

Susan concluded with a quote from Ann's mother Jenette, "There are so many lessons to be learned from her [Ann's] life, the way she lived it. I really want people to feel what happened, and then I want them to get up and do something about it. Hate and violence are such an evil force in the world and there are so many things we can do to counteract them. I think that people can feel it through a story like Ann's if they get to know her and what she stood for ... I think they will be motivated to make the world a better place. A place where something like 9/11 could never happen again."

All Alumni Reunion Weekend, October 7-9, 2011

Wayland's Alumni could not have asked for a better fall Wisconsin Weekend for the All Alumni Reunion Weekend! Alumni began arriving around noon on Friday, October 7, allowing them time to walk around their alma mater to see what is new and what has remained the same from their days at Wayland. That evening all were invited to attend a reception at the President's House.

The All Alumni Meeting and Breakfast on Saturday morning was well-attended. Trustee Chair Susan Peterson `63 gave everyone a warm welcome and thanked them for making this the best attended reunion since the Sesquicentennial. She asked, "How many of you were here when Ray Patterson was president and headmaster? Also known as Radar Ray?" The room fell quiet and many hands were raised. She continued, "As you may already know, Ray Patterson `40 recently passed away. Mr. Patterson `40 was Wayland's Headmaster for 17 years - longer than most of our presidents - from 1953 to 1970, and he had an incredible impact on this school. As Headmaster, he had the foresight to purchase 33 acres from the Dodge County Fairgrounds, now known as the South campus, doubling Wayland's footprint. He raised more than a million dollars - big money back then - to fund the construction of this dining hall and Kimberly Chapel...before he left to manage the Milwaukee Bucks and the Houston Rockets." Last year, by unanimous vote of the Board of Trustees - Mr. Patterson was elected an Honorary Trustee and President Emeritus of Wayland Academy.

Wayland's Website Wins National Design Competition!

Recently Wayland heard from Chris Remington, the Vice President of Client Strategy and Business Development for Trivera, the website company that designed the look of our new website. He told us they submitted wayland.org about four months ago to the 2011 American Graphics Design Awards and www.wayland.org was recognized by the New York-based Graphic Design USA for excellence in web design.
